🌸 Part 1: Non-Spoiler Review
Dong-baek is truly the heart of When the Camellia Blooms, but for me, Yong-sik was the one who completely stole my heart.
He is the biggest reason why this drama feels so warm, comforting, and impossible to forget.
A Green Flag Male Lead
Dong-baek is a single mother, and in her small town, people often look down on her with heavy judgment.
But Yong-sik? He couldn’t care less about what other people think.
He simply loves Dong-baek for exactly who she is.
He doesn’t play hard to get, nor does he try to act “cool” or distant. He is just delightfully honest about his feelings and charges straight toward her without playing any emotional games.
Watching his pure, earnest, and hilarious way of loving Dong-baek brought a smile to my face so many times while watching.
Is It a Thriller or a Rom-Com?
Because there is a serial killer storyline running in the background, you might find yourself asking:
“Wait, is this really a romantic comedy?”
Don’t worry!
While the thriller mystery adds a nice layer of tension, at its very core, this is a deeply comforting story about love, family, community acceptance, and emotional healing.

🌺 Part 2: My Thoughts After Watching
Breaking the Prejudice Against Single Mothers
What touched my heart the most was how beautifully this drama portrayed the life and dignity of a single mother.
Dong-baek has lived under the shadow of people’s harsh judgment for so long. Yet, she works tirelessly every day, raising her son on her own and giving him everything she has.
When I was watching, I read comments from real-life single mothers who said they felt deeply comforted and validated by this show. And reading their words, I completely understood why.
Dong-baek’s story gently reminds us that raising a child alone is never something to be ashamed of. It shows the incredible, quiet strength of a mother doing everything to protect her child and build a life for herself.
The Women of Ongsan
I also loved watching how the relationship between Dong-baek and the neighborhood ajummas (town women) transformed over time.
In the beginning, they gossip about her and make her feel like an outsider.
But when Dong-baek faces real danger, those very same women step up and stand together to shield her.
They might bicker and gossip on ordinary days, but when one of their own needs help, they become an unbreakable wall. That shift was easily one of the warmest and most rewarding parts of the entire series.
Dong-baek’s True Strength
Yong-sik always stays by her side, loving her proudly without a single trace of hesitation. With his unconditional love and support, Dong-baek slowly learns to hold her head high.
However, I don’t think Yong-sik is the one who made her strong.
Dong-baek was already strong from the very beginning.
She had survived years of isolation, raised her son, and kept going despite the cold stares of the world.
Yong-sik’s love simply gave her the safe space to finally see the power that was already inside her.
By the end, she is no longer the fearful woman hiding in the shadows. She even stands face-to-face with the serial killer without flinching.
Looking back, it almost feels like the serial killer storyline was placed there to show us—and Dong-baek herself—just how fiercely powerful she had become.
When Dong-baek finally stood up to him, I honestly wanted to stand up and cheer for her out loud. I’m sure I wasn’t the only viewer feeling that rush of pride!
