Today’s Lyrics

어둠 속에 번진 별
아직 희미하지만
이미 피어난 장미
누구보다 빛날 별

어둠 속에 번진 별 [eodum soge beonjin byeol]

A star spreading through the darkness

어둠 [eodum]: darkness

속 [sok]: inside / interior

에 [e]: location particle

어둠 속에 [eodum soge]: in the darkness

번지다 [beonjida]: to spread

번진 [beonjin]: spread / that has spread

별 [byeol]: star

Grammar Tip: Noun + 속에 [soge]

Noun + 속에 means “in” or “inside” something.

Here, 속 [sok] means “inside,” and 에 [e] is a location particle.

For example:

가방 속에 [gabang soge]: in the bag

상자 속에 [sangja soge]: inside the box

So:

어둠 속에 [eodum soge]
= in the darkness

아직 희미하지만 [ajik huimihajiman]

It is still faint, but…

아직 [ajik]: still / yet

희미하다 [huimihada]: to be faint / dim

희미하지만 [huimihajiman]: it is faint, but… / although it is faint

희미하 + 지만 → 희미하지만

Grammar Tip: -지만 [jiman]

-지만 means “but” or “although.”

It connects two contrasting ideas.

For example:

맵지만 맛있어요. [maepjiman masisseoyo]
It’s spicy, but it’s delicious.

  • 맵다 [maepda]: to be spicy
  • 맵지만 [maepjiman]: spicy, but…
  • 맛있다 [masitda]: to be delicious
  • 맛있어요 [masisseoyo]: it’s delicious

바쁘지만 괜찮아요. [bappeujiman gwaenchanayo]
I’m busy, but I’m okay.

  • 바쁘다 [bappeuda]: to be busy
  • 바쁘지만 [bappeujiman]: busy, but…
  • 괜찮다 [gwaenchanta]: to be okay
  • 괜찮아요 [gwaenchanayo]: I’m okay

이미 피어난 장미 [imi pieonan jangmi]

A rose that has already bloomed

이미 [imi]: already

피어나다 [pieonada]: to bloom / to blossom

피어난 [pieonan]: that has bloomed

장미 [jangmi]: rose

Grammar Tip: Past Modifying Form -(으)ㄴ

-(으)ㄴ is used after an action verb to describe a noun with a completed or past action.

If the verb stem ends in a vowel, add -ㄴ.

피어나다 [pieonada] → 피어난 [pieonan]

If the verb stem ends in a consonant, add -은.

먹다 [meokda] → 먹은 [meogeun]

For example:

어제 본 영화 [eoje bon yeonghwa]
the movie I watched yesterday

  • 어제 [eoje]: yesterday
  • 보다 [boda]: to see / watch
  • 보 + ㄴ → 본 [bon]
  • 영화 [yeonghwa]: movie

내가 읽은 책 [naega ilgeun chaek]
the book that I read

  • 내가 [naega]: I
  • 읽다 [ikda]: to read
  • 읽 + 은 → 읽은 [ilgeun]
  • 책 [chaek]: book

누구보다 빛날 별 [nuguboda bitnal byeol]

A star that will shine brighter than anyone else

누구 [nugu]: who / anyone

-보다 [boda]: than

누구보다 [nuguboda]: more than anyone

빛나다 [bitnada]: to shine

빛날 [bitnal]: that will shine

별 [byeol]: star

Grammar Tip 1: Comparison Particle -보다 [boda]

The particle -보다 is attached to a noun and means “than.”

For example:

나보다 [naboda]: than me

너보다 [neoboda]: than you

When it is used with 누구 [nugu], we get:

누구보다 [nuguboda]
more than anyone

For example:

누구보다 예쁜 너 [nuguboda yeppeun neo]
you, prettier than anyone else

  • 누구보다 [nuguboda]: more than anyone
  • 예쁘다 [yeppeuda]: to be pretty
  • 예쁜 [yeppeun]: pretty / who is pretty
  • 너 [neo]: you

Grammar Tip 2: Future Modifying Form -(으)ㄹ

-(으)ㄹ is used here to describe a noun with a future action.

If the verb stem ends in a vowel, add -ㄹ.

빛나다 [bitnada] → 빛날 [bitnal]

If the verb stem ends in a consonant, add -을.

먹다 [meokda] → 먹을 [meogeul]

For example:

내일 만날 사람 [naeil mannal saram]
the person I will meet tomorrow

  • 내일 [naeil]: tomorrow
  • 만나다 [mannada]: to meet
  • 만나 + ㄹ → 만날 [mannal]
  • 사람 [saram]: person

오늘 먹을 음식 [oneul meogeul eumsik]
the food I will eat today

  • 오늘 [oneul]: today
  • 먹다 [meokda]: to eat
  • 먹 + 을 → 먹을 [meogeul]
  • 음식 [eumsik]: food

What Do These Lyrics Mean?

In these lyrics, a faint star in the darkness is compared to a rose that has already bloomed.

And the lyrics say that the star will shine even brighter in the future.

Maybe this is how The Rose sees themselves.

They may have been a faint light in the darkness until now, but they are already a blooming rose. And one day, they will shine even brighter.

To me, these lyrics are filled with hope for the future.

I hope the dreams of these beautiful young men will continue to reach people through their music, and that the world they dream of will come true.

Maybe that is the Utopia they are talking about.

I believe the songs of The Rose will continue to become brighter stars that shine in this dark world.

And I’m looking forward to hearing more of their music.
